Sydney is noted for its efficient public transport, especially on its CityRail suburban lines. Here's a quick guide on how to take the train from Sydney's City Circle.
Difficulty Level: Easy Time Required: Varies.
Here's How:
- There are five City Circle stops in central Sydney, four - Town Hall, Wynyard, St James and Museum - underground; one, Circular Quay, above ground. A fifth station, Martin Place, is also underground but is not part of the City Circle.
- Check your destination to find out where your departure platform is.
- You can take the train from any of the City Circle stations to practically any Sydney suburb on the railway line, either directly or by transferring at some point to another train.
- You can take the direct train to Bondi Junction from Town Hall or Martin Place.
- Purchase your ticket from the ticket window or from an automated ticket machine.
- Your ticket will have a magnetic stripe. When you slip your ticket into the correct slot, it should let you in through the turnstile.
- Hold on to your ticket.
- Wait for your train on the correct platform.
- Trains for different destinations may use the same platform so be sure to take the correct train by listening to announcements or by perusing the boards which should also tell you where any particular train stops.
- Board your train.
- If you have purchased a return (round trip) ticket, your ticket will pop up as you pass the turnstile. Take it for when you take the train trip back.
- Don't lose your ticket. If you're found to have no ticket in your possession while on the train, you're liable for a fine. You also need the ticket to leave the train station.
- Most train stations in the suburbs have connecting bus lines. You can buy a ticket covering train and bus (and ferry, if needed) travel.
- If you need to transfer to another train, be sure you know where to get your connection.
