Port Arthur ... convict settlement and prison
© Australian Tourist Commission
Port Arthur is located in the Tasman Peninsula about a 90-minute drive from the Tasmania capital, Hobart. It was the site in colonial times of a convict settlement and prison, a "hell on earth" for recidivist convicts. The ruins of the settlement have been preserved and are a much-visited Tasmanian historical site. In more recent times, 35 Port Arthur visitors and workers were killed when a Tasmanian named Martin Bryant etched a trail of blood, firing at shopkeepers, shop assistants, tourists, and whoever else came in his way...
