Honoring Lawrence Hargrave

Aviation Pioneer

This monument at Bald Hill overlooking Stanwell Park beach south of Sydney's Royal National Park is dedicated to Australian aviation pioneer Lawrence Hargrave (1850-1915), recognised as the father of modern aviation. Here, on November 12, 1894, Hargrave, the Australian inventor of the box kite, linked four of his kites together, added a sling seat, and flew 16 feet in the air to prove that man could fly. This inspired the development of flying machines.

The scenic coastal route between Stanwell Park and Bulli further south has been named Lawrence Hargrave Drive in honor of Australia's aviation pioneer.
