The saltwater crocodile, familiarly known as saltie, attacks even when unprovoked and has caused the death of many of the unwary.
You will find saltwater crocodiles in the Northern Territory, particularly at the Top End, and in northern Queensland, in and around rivers, marshes and billabongs.
Although dangerous, the saltwater crocodile (as well as its freshwater cousin, the freshie) is a protected species.
