Brisbane, capital of the Australian state of Queensland, is often overshadowed by the popularity of the resort regions north and south of the city.
North of Brisbane are Noosa and the Sunshine Coast and south of it lies the tpourist magnet that is the Gold Coast.
Brisbane River runs through the city, separating the central business district located within a bend of the river and the entertainment and cultural precinct that is South Bank.
Brisbane became the capital of Queensland when the state was proclaimed a separate colony from New South Wales in 1859.
