Narooma, on the New South Wales South Coast, is right on the Pacific Highway, 349 kilometres and little more than a four-hour drive, with rest breaks, south of Sydney.
Narooma is said to mean "land of many waters" in the Aboriginal language. It lies along Wagonga Inlet in the west and the Pacific in the east.
Australia Rock
At Wagonga Head, wind and wave have etched a hole in the rock in the shape of the Australian map. This is Narooma's Australia Rock.
Golf course
Between the Pacific and the Narooma township lies a waterside golf course stretching from Wagonga Head in the north to Little Lake in the south just past the surf beach. The clubhouse has accommodation and dining facilities.
Hotels, motels, apartments
Much of the available accommodation in the Narooma area, aside from a number of hotels and motels, are serviced apartments which can be rented by the day, the weekend or the month, or for longer periods, if desired.
There are real estate agents in Narooma who look after the renting of apartments, often also called holiday units.
Go surfcasting or get a boat
But to go to the fishing.
You can cast your line along the shores around Wagonga Head or go fishing in the surf (surfcasting) from beaches or coastal rocks (rock fishing).
Or you can hire a boat — and fishing equipment if you dont have your own — and fish in the river or out in the ocean.
Or you can join a fishing cruise on a chartered boat, whose captain may be better able to steer you towards where the fish are biting.
Favorite haunt
A favorite haunt are the waters around Montague Island, offshore from Narooma and Bermagui.
After marlin or the giant tuna? Charter a boat and go on your own or join an ocean-going chartered boat trip.
Other activities
Narooma is popular as a summertime holiday destination. Aside from the fishing, there are good short beaches north of the Wagonga River.
At the headland, snorkeling is a popular activity particularly in calm weather.
