Answer: St Helens is the largest town on the eastern coast of Tasmania. It is situated on George Bay along the Tasman Highway (A3) somewhere between the northeastern coast national parks of Mt William and Douglas Apsley. It is closer to Launceston (170 kiometres), which is roughly west of St Helens, than to the capital, Hobart (260 kilometres), in the south.
St Helens is said to be the birthplace of glamorous movie star and screen legend Merle Oberon.
Regular bus lines ply between Launceston and the towns of St Marys or Derby with connections to St Helens and between St Helens and Hobart.
Formerly a whaling town first settled in 1830, St Helens is Tasmania's largest fishing port with a large fleet of fishing boats in George Bay.
There are a number of good beaches close to St Helens.
