World War I historian and war correspondent

C E W Bean

After experiencing firsthand the savage battles of World War I, Australian historian and official war correspondent Charles Bean — who went ashore with the Anzacs at Gallipoli in 1915 — planned, and pushed for, the establishment of the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. He is credited with being a major force in the creation of the legend of the Anzacs.
