March is the first month of the Australian autumn. Warm turning to cool weather would be the norm in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the southern parts of Western Australia. In tropical Australia, warm weather is expected to continue with rains at the Top End as the Wet season continues.

Sydney Mardi Gras

The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras starts in February and may end in early March with its traditionally glittering nighttime parade. This year, 2009, the parade happens on March 7.

Easter season

Easter being a movable feast day, the Easter season and the Sydney Royal Easter Show may take place in March. This year, 2009, it happens in early April.

Labor Day

Labor Day is on the first Monday in March in Western Australia and on the second Monday in March in Victoria. The equivalent public holiday in Tasmania is Eight Hours Day on the second Monday in March.

Moomba Festival

Melbourne's Moomba Festival takes place during the Victorian Labor Day holiday weekend.

St Patrick's Day

St Patrick's Day, not a public holiday, is on March 17. When held, St Patrick's Day parades usually take place during a weekend closest to St Patrick's Day.

Canberra Day

Canberra Day, a public holiday in the Australian Capital Territory, takes place in March. This year, 2009, it was on Monday, March 9. In 2010, it takes place on March 15.
