Australian Open 2007

Federer, Williams Win Singles Titles

By Larry Rivera, About.com

  • Men's World No 1 and Swiss player Roger Federer won the 2007 Australian Open, defeating Chilean Fernando Gonzalez, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3, 6-4, in the men's singles men's final on January 28. It was Federer's third Australian Open title.

  • American comeback queen Serena Williams routed top seed Russian player Maria Sharapova, 6-1, 6-2, in the women's singles final. Williams was unseeded in the tournament and was ranked No 81 in world women's tennis prior to the Australian Open.

The Australian Open, the first of the world's four Grand Slam tennis tournaments during the year, opened at Melbourne Park on January 15, 2007.

The Australian Open reached its climax on January 28 with the men's singles championship match.

The four Grand Slam tournaments are the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open. Only one, Australian tennis player Rod Laver, has won the Grand Slam — winning all four tournaments in one year — twice.

The world's top 20 men's singles players all competed in the 2007 Australian Open. Eighteen of the top 20 women's singles players were in the Open this year, the notable absence being world No 1 Justine Henin-Harden (Belgium).
