Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race 1999
Nokia Breaks the Record

By , About.com Guide

  • Overall winner: Yendys, Geoff Ross, NSW
  • Line honors: Nokia, Stefan Myralf/Michael Spies, Denmark — 1:19:48:02

The strong winds predicted for the 1999 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race were actually thought to be conducive for a race record, and Nokia, the water-ballasted VO60 yacht, did set a record of 1 day, 19 hours, 48 minutes and 2 seconds for the journey to Hobart. (The Mari-Cha III, which was not in competition, sailed into Hobart more than an hour ahead of Nokia.)

Nokia was followed into Hobart by nearest rivals Brindabella (1 day, 20 hours, 46 minutes, 33 seconds) and Wild Thing (1 day, 21 hours, 13 minutes, 37 seconds).

The previous Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race record had been set by Morning Glory (2 days, 14 hours, 7 minutes, 10 seconds) in 1996.
