Government and History

The federation of the states of Australia occurred in 1901 but the country's history naturally goes farther back than that, beyond Captain James Cook's landing at Botany Bay in 1770, and into the deeper past of the Aboriginal Dreamtime.
Australian Governor-General's Role
The Governor-General of Australia is the official representative of the Queen as head of state, and has such powers, duties and responsibilities as have been entrusted to him.

Centenary of Federation
Peals of bells marked the 100th anniversary of the coming together of the six British colonies into one Australian Commonwealth. Celebrations were held throughout 2001.
Republic Move Fails in Australia
Australia voted in 1999 on a referendum which decided against a republic as the Australian form of government.
