Is Keith Urban Australian?

By Larry Rivera, About.com

Question: Is Keith Urban Australian?

Answer:

Award-winning country singer Keith Urban is generally considered Australian and calls Australia home although he was born in New Zealand and has residence in Nashville, Tennessee.

He was born in Whangarei, New Zealand, on October 26, 1967. Whangarei on New Zealand's North Island is 170 kilometres north of Auckland.

He grew up and went to school in Australia — in Caboolture, Queensland, which is considered his hometown. Caboolture is 40 kilometres north of Brisbane, the Queensland capital.

In 2005 and again in 2006, Keith Urban was named Top Male Vocalist by the Academy of Country Music. The 2006 awards were held in May 2006 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Australian awards

Keith Urban came to prominence at the Country Music Association of Australia awards in 1991 when he was awarded the Golden Guitar as best new talent.

He then went on to win several more Golden Guitars as male vocalist and intstrumentalist. The Austraian country music awards are held in Tamworth during the Country Music Festival.

Keith Urban received a number of awards (outstanding achievement and country album of the year) from the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA).

Sydney wedding

On June 25, 2006, Keith Urban and movie actress Nicole Kidman were married in Australia, in the beachside Sydney suburb of Manly.

They had met in January 2005 at an Australia Week function in Los Angeles.
