From Queenstown, your bus takes you to Milford Sound, through Te Anau, with possible stops at the Mirror Lake and just before entering the Homer Tunnel which drivers love going through in darkness.

For me, Milford Sound encapsulates all I enjoy most about New Zealand: the serenity of the place with the water surface mirroring the surrounding islands, cliffs and towering peaks, and the many waterfalls on the mountainsides making their way to this inlet of the sea. Really the pictures I took of Milford Sound hardly do justice to the air of tranquility and the majesty of water and land formations.

This is part of the Tasman Sea, of course, and on your cruise of Milford Sound you can almost see Australia on a clear day.

Nature at its grandest

This is nature at its grandest and the experience of Milford Sound -- Bowen Falls, Mitre Peak, Anita Bay, The Elephant and Stirling Falls -- lives long in many memories of New Zealand. (And of course, videos and photographs help.)

And then it’s back to Queenstown for the night.
