You'll need to know what Auckland transportation you can use for reasons of practicality and effectiveness.
If you havent rented a car, or dont want to use one in the city, you can always use the bus.
Bus routes and timetable
You can find the downtown bus terminal on Commerce St between Quay St and Customs St East. This is a couple of streets south of the Captain Cook Wharf.
Not all Auckland buses start from here, so pick up an Auckland bus route timetable from the bus terminal, at a newsagent, or at the Visitor Centre on Queen St. It is quite possible that your bus passes close to where you stay, so there may be no need to go down to Commerce St.
Note that most local buses only run from 6.30am to 10.30pm Monday to Saturday and only until 7pm on Sunday. If you stay out late you may find theres no bus to take you home.
Or grab a cab
You can, of course, use the taxi whenever you want.
You may be able to find a vacant one cruising around in downtown areas (or, with luck, anywhere else), but its usually advisable to book one by phone if you want to be sure of getting one, especially at night.
Have a city map
Whatever you do, be sure to have a good Auckland city map. Its quite possible that where you want to go may just be within walking distance.
When you're going shopping, walking may be the best option once you've reached your choice of shopping areas.
Bike or motorbike
Its also possible to hire a bicycle if you want to cycle around. There are motorcycles for hire as well.
Cruising on the harbour
To cruise the harbour or visit one of the islands in the Hauraki Gulf, there are boats and cruise ships on the wharves at Quay St in Auckland.
One of the nearer islands you may want to visit is Rangitoto Island, 45 minutes from Auckland by ferry.
