You should be in Katoomba before noon and have time to view the Three Sisters rock formation rising from the floor of the Jamison Valley.

At Scenic World, you might want to take either the Scenic Skyway cable car high above the valley or the Scenic Railway which plunges almost perpendicularly to the valley floor. Or experience both.

The Scenic Skyway is a new cable car from Switzerland designed to carry 84 people. It has a floor that can become transparent at the flick of a switch.

Come lunch time, there are some cottage restaurants in Katoomba with the ambience of colonial times where you may decide to go.

More of Nature's wonders

Or if it's early yet you can proceed along Great Western Highway, where you could have lunch in the Hartley Valley, before going further on and turning at the marked intersection for the road to the Jenolan Caves.

Here, some of nature's underground wonders await you in the stalactite and stalagmite caves where cathedral-like structures glow eerily and whitely in the wash of well-placed lighting. There are several Jenolan caves to visit and a schedule of times to visit each one.

There should be just enough time for the drive back Sydney, reaching the city after nightfall.
