The highest peak in Australia — Mt Kosciuszko (previously spelled Kosciusko) at 2228 metres — is in the Snowy Mountains.

You can go cross-country skiing at Kosciuszco National Park. Check with a visitor centre for more information.

For many ski enthusiasts a favorite place in the Snowy Mountains is Thredbo with its cluster of hotels, motels and apartments, a vibrant night life, and ski lifts to the various ski slopes. Or go to Perisher Valley.

It should take just about half an hour to reach either Thredbo or Perisher from Jindabyne but if you're driving on slippery roads you'd naturally take longer.

Perisher Ski Resort

The Perisher Ski Resort is an amalgamation of the Perisher, Smiggins, Blue Cow and Guthega sites with 1250 hectares of snow-covered terrain linked by 50 ski lifts across seven mountain peaks.

If you're going by car to the ski resorts, you may need to have snow chains fitted or you may not be allowed on snowed-over roads.

On the way to the snow, or coming back from there, take time for a bit of Sydney sightseeing and check out the city's winter activities.

You may wish to drive north of Sydney as well, or south or west. And brush up on a bit of Strine and speak like the locals do.

The Australian snowfields are, of course, not only in New South Wales, and Victoria certainly has some great spots for skiing as well.
