What Are Australian Postcodes?

By Larry Rivera, About.com

Question: What Are Australian Postcodes?

Answer: For those used to the American postal system, Australian postcodes are the equivalent of American zip codes.

They identify and refer to localised mail delivery areas throughout the country.

Comprising four digits, the first digit identifies the Australian state or territory it applies to, thus:

  • 0: Northern Territory
  • 2: New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory
  • 3: Victoria
  • 4: Queensland
  • 5: South Australia
  • 6: Western Australia
  • 7: Tasmania

As an example, the postcode for the Sydney city centre is 2000. My postcode is 2177 which is in the Sydney southwest.

Occasionally you will find postcodes starting with 1. These are specific postcodes which direct mail to particular organisations, such as the Australian Tax Office, which may have offices in two or more states or territories.

To find the particular postcode you want, visit the Australia Post website and search for the postcode you need.

If for some reason this page is unavailable or has been moved, go to the Australia Post homepage and look for Postcodes.
