Location: Fraser Island is on the southeastern Queensland coast, 250 kilometres north of Brisbane, the state capital. It is around 110 kilometres from Noosa Heads on the Sunshine Coast. Nearby airports are at Hervey Bay and Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast.
- Fraser Island was inscribed in 1992 as a World Heritage site by the World Heritage Committee of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), which noted that "majestic remnants of tall rainforest growing on sand and half the world's perched freshwater dune lakes are found inland from the beach. The combination of shifting sand-dunes, tropical rainforests and lakes makes it an exceptional site."
Size: The area of 159,000 hectares mentioned in this article comes from the Macquarie Dictionary. Other sources indicate different areas. There are also differences in the reported dimensions of the island. These differences in area and dimensions may be attributable to changes in the geography of the sand island.
