Cairns, in far north Queensland, is accessed from Brisbane on the Bruce Highway and from the hinterland on the Kennedy Highway.

Both the Bruce and Kennedy Highways are part of Australia's circumferential Highway 1.

Cairns is some 1700 kilometres by road from Brisbane, capital of Queensland, and 2700 kilometres from Sydney.

Cairns is serviced by an international airport with direct flights from countries such as New Zealand, Hong Kong, Japan, Guam and Papua New Guinea as well as Singapore via Darwin. The airport provides both international and domestic flight services.

For those who prefer traveling by train, the Sunlander takes the coastal route from Brisbane to Cairns on a leisurely 32-hour journey.
