- Rolling farmlands, vineyards and wineries, heritage buildings and a series of fine beaches lie just south of the South Australia capital of Adelaide in the picturesque Fleurieu Peninsula...
If you were driving from Adelaide to Cape Jervis in South Australia -- and traveled an average speed of, say, 90 kilometres per hour -- it would take you about an hour and 15 minutes to do the 110-kilometre journey.
Cape Jervis is at the southwestern tip of the Fleurieu Peninsula, which is where you take a ferry to Kangaroo Island.
You could be back in Adelaide, the South Australia capital, in just about three hours.
All this is by way of demonstrating the closeness to Adelaide of any number of daytrip destinations on the Fleurieu Peninsula -- named after Napoleon's Navy Minister, Charles Pierre Claret, Comte de Fleurieu -- which starts just south of Adelaide at Morphett Vale.
Beaches and vineyards
In the warmer seasons, for instance, you would not want for beaches all along Gulf St Vincent on the western coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula.
On the rugged southern side facing the Southern Ocean are surfing beaches, while inland are farmlands and the vineyards of the McLaren Vale wine growing area.
Daily coach trips
If you felt like leaving the driving to others, there are daily coach trips to McLaren Vale, Jervis Bay and Victor Harbor near the mouth of the Inman River. There’s even a steam train you can take from Mt Barker in the Adelaide Hills to Victor Harbor.
