While it is whale watching which has thrust Kaikoura into prominence, the small South Island town framed by mountains and the Pacific has many more activities and attractions to offer.
It is said that a reason for Kaikoura's abundance of aquatic and bird life is the ecology of the landform itself.
Unique ecosystem
Whale Watch Kaikoura says: "The peninsula provides the meeting place for two strong ocean currents which converge in the deep water canyons and plunge to incredible depths just a few kilometres from the shore.
"The result is a unique ecosystem which sustains the many marine creatures to be found here."
Divers' playground
Commercial and recreational fisherman find prized crayfish as well as such fish as hapuka, blue cod and terakihi.
The waters off Kaikoura are, as well, a divers' playground, if not paradise.
Variety of marine life
The variety of whales visiting Kaikoura waters includes the rare migratory humpback whale which may be seen in the winter, and the killer orca in the summer.
There is a large variety of dolphins, seals and birds.
Variety of activities
Because of its geographic, geological and ecological features, Kaikoura ranks high in ecotourism.
The many water activities in the region include surfing, windsurfing, fishing, sailing, canoeing, jet boating, white water rafting, swimming, scuba diving.
Land activities include coastal walks, bushwalks, horse treks, golf, skiing, limestone cave visits.
Or fly for a spot of whale spotting from the air.
