When confronted with questions on what to do and where to go on visiting Sydney, Australia, for the first time, here are three practical steps to give you a running start on Sydney, Australia, sightseeing.
1. Get to Circular Quay
Circular Quay, with its train and bus terminals and watercraft jetties, is the harbourside transportation hub in Sydney, Australia.
From here you can walk to the Sydney Opera House, a must place to visit if you haven't been to Sydney, or Australia, before.
Also from Circular Quay, you can take a Sydney sightseeing walking tour to The Rocks, Hyde Park and on to Darling Harbour.
There are currency exchange booths at Circular quay as well as tour operator counters for boat cruises and coach trips for Sydney sightseeing or for tours outside the city.
If you are in the city, you may be able to simply walk to Circular Quay. If the Quay is not within convenient walking distance, take a train or bus to Circular Quay.
2. Visit the Visitor Centre
The Sydney Visitor Centre at The Rocks is within walking distance from Circular Quay. Walk west from the ferry jetties and turn right on George St. Turn left on Argyle St and The Rocks Centre should be on your right, just before the Lowenbrau Keller restaurant. The Sydney Visitor Centre is on Level 1 of The Rocks Centre.
You should find much information on sightseeing in Sydney, Australia, in free tourist brochures and pamphlets. Some material, including detailed maps, may be for sale.
Don't hesitate to ask at the counter for clarification or particular details.
3. Ride the Sydney Explorer
The Sydney Explorer buses take you to Sydney sightseeing attractions all over the city on a designated route.
This is a hop-on, hop-off service on one ticket which means you can get off the bus at any stop and get on a later bus to continue your Sydney sightseeing bus tour.
The Sydney Explorer buses are distinctively painted red. They take in many of the Sydney city sightseeing attractions. There is also a Bondi Explorer bus which is painted blue and takes in some of Sydney's best-known beaches.
You can buy tickets for either the red or blue Explorer routes or both. Get your tickets from the Sydney Visitor Centre, at designated Sydney Explorer outlets, or on the bus itself.
Plan what else you want to do
The Sydney Explorer buses are great for seeing as much of Sydney as possible within a limited time, or for an overview of Sydney sightseeing attractions.
With an informed overview, and with information gathered at Circular Quay and the Sydney Visitor Centre, you can then plan what else you want to do — and can do — in the time you have.
