Freycinet National Park includes not only the Freycinet Peninsula but also Schouten Island off its southern tip and the Friendly Beaches north of Coles Bay.
The 300-metre granite mountains called the Hazards are close to the town of Coles Bay which is the gateway to the many attractions of Freycinet National Park.
If traveling from Hobart, take the scenic Tasman Highway (A3) north through Swansea.
About 20-30 minutes past Swansea, turn right into Coles Bay Rd (C302), and travel through Coles Bay township to reach the Freycinet National Park entrance. There is an entrance fee.
Alternative routes
If traveling from Launceston, take the Heritage Highway (A1) south to Campbell Town.
Turn left into the Lake Leake Highway (B34) and then left again into the Tasman Highway (A3). Turn right into Coles Bay Rd (C302) at the turnoff and enter Freycinet National Park after the Coles Bay township.
This is but one route from Launceston to Freycinet National Park. Check your map for alternative routes.
Driving to Freycinet National Park should take about three hours from either Hobart or Launceston.
Fly, bus, or join a tour
There are private airstrips in the area, as well as a helipad adjacent to Freycinet Lodge, so it is possible to fly into the Freycinet area in light aircraft.
There is a bus from Hobart to Bicheno, north of Freycinet National Park. You can alight at the Coles Bay turnoff (well before Bicheno) and hitch a ride into the park. Alternatively, alight at Bicheno and take one of the shuttle buses to Coles Bay.
Of course, if you take a tour from either Hobart or Launceston, you can leave the driving to someone else.
