The Lion King
From Broadway through Sydney to Melbourne

By Larry Rivera, About.com

  • After closing in Sydney in June 2005, The Lion King opened in Melbourne at the Regent Theatre on July 28 with a season that ended on June 4, 2006.

The Lion King, which opened at the Capitol Theatre on October 16, 2003, and closed on June 26, 2005, has proved the stage musical isn't dead in Sydney despite some flops in the past couple of years, including the aborted Sydney season of The Full Monty.

Earlier scheduled to close its Sydney season on April 30, 2005, after an 18-month run, The Lion King season was extended to June 26, 2005.

The Lion King opened on Broadway in 1997 in the then newly refurbished New Amsterdam Theatre on 42nd St, New York. The Disney musical (from the Disney animated film) has been staged not only in New York but also in such other cities as London, Toronto, Hamburg, Tokyo and Fukuoka.
