Sydney Theatre
22 Hickson Rd, Walsh Bay

By Larry Rivera, About.com

Officially opened in January 2004, the Sydney Theatre Company's Sydney Theatre is the latest purpose-built theatre venue in Sydney and the newest addition to the complex of theatres along Hickson Rd in Walsh Bay.

The Sydney Theatre Company has two other, older, theatre venues in the area - Wharf 1 and Wharf 2 - as well as having its home there.

850-seat venue

Sydney Theatre is an 850-seat venue designed as as a specialist drama and dance theatre. It is larger than the 544-seat Drama Theatre but smaller than the 1547-seat Opera Theatre both located in the Sydney Opera House.

Sydney Theatre was expected to provide a threatre venue not only for Sydney Theatre Company productions but also for works staged by Walsh Bay residents Sydney Dance Company and Bangarra Dance Theatre. It could also house touring productions from similarly-sized venues interstate as well as productions from overseas.

Getting there

By car

From the Sydney central business district and points north, south and east: Once in central Sydney, follow George St north to The Rocks, turn right on Hickson Rd, and follow it to the theatre. There is much city traffic on narrow George St, so allow extra time for travel.

From Sydney's inner and outer western suburbs: Take the Western Distributor, watch out for, and take, the City Centre Exit on your left, then turn left on Sussex St at the junction of King St. Sussex St then becomes Hickson Rd. Follow the curve of the road to the theatre.

Metered parking is available along Hickson Rd and in centre-of-the-road parking areas. Have plenty of $1 and $2 coins for the parking meters. Alternatively, book beforehand into Sydney Theatre's temporary parking space in the wharf.

By bus

Take Bus 430 from the Queen Victoria Building to Sydney Theatre. There are bus stops along George St going north, then the route veers left on Argyle St to join Hickson Rd.

By train

Take the train to Circular Quay. Catch a bus to Hickson Rd, take a taxi, or walk.

On foot

In you have the time, follow Circular Quay West from the Circular Quay transport hub. Walk beyond the Park Hyatt and into Hickson Rd. Follow the road to the theatre. It's a pleasant waterside walk for much of the way.
