Australian Trains

Australian trains fill a need for more leisurely travel over great distances on the Australian continent. And state and city rail systems provide efficient transport for workers and commuters. In this list are some Australian trains for long-distance travel.

The Ghan

Train from Adelaide to Alice Springs extended to Darwin in February 2004.

The Indian Pacific

The Indian Pacific links Sydney and Perth through Outback New South Wales and South Australia and the Nullarbor Plain.

The Overland

The Overland train links the Victorian state capital of Melbourne with the South Australian capital of Adelaide.

The Southern Spirit

The Southern Spirit is the latest of Great Southern Rail's transcontinental trains and travels between Adelaide and Brisbane and between Melbourne and Brisbane.

The Sunlander

The Sunlander is Queensland Rail's coastal train between Brisbane and Cairns, traveling close to 1700 kilometres three times weekly.

Sydney City Circle

In Sydney the underground train circuit is called the City Circle. The terms subway, underground, tube and metro are not used in reference to the city railway system.

CountryLink

NSW train service serving certain regions of the state and interstate to Brisbane, Canberra and Melbourne.
