Of the Great Southern Railway trains, and discounting the troubled early days of the Ghan, it is the Overland which has been in service longest.
It pioneered inter-capital train travel between Melbourne and Adelaide in 1887 and after 120 years continues to provide that link.
In May 2007, a new-look refurbished Overland went into service with more leg room in two classes of sit-up service, newly refurbished interiors and a new cafe carriage.
- Passengers from Melbourne proceeding north to Darwin take the Ghan from Adelaide.
As with the Ghan and Indian Pacific, there are two classes of service on the Overland: the Gold Kangaroo Service and the Red Kangaroo Service. They differ from those on the longer-distance trains.
