A short stroll from Federation Square across the Yarra River over the Princess Bridge, the National Gallery of Victoria is home to the state's impressive international art collection, arguably the largest such collection in the country.

Since the National Gallery of Victoria opened on St Kilda Road in 1968, its total collection of European, Asian, Oceanic and American art has doubled in size to more than 60,000 works of art. Its Australian collection now resides in the Ian Potter Centre in Federation Square.

Name change

The National Gallery of Victoria on St Kilda Rd, now more properly known as NGV International, reopened in 2003 after extensive renovations.

NGV International is open Wednesday to Monday from 10am to 5pm except on Christmas Day and Good Friday. On Anzac Day it opens at 1pm. Closing the International gallery one day a week, on Tuesdays, was announced in late July 2005 and took effect from early October that year.

Entry to the National Gallery's permanent exhibitions is free. Fees may apply to special, particularly visiting, exhibitions.
