The Ian Potter Centre at Melbourne's Federation Square is reputed to be the world's first major gallery dedicated exclusively to Australian art.
Entry to the Ian Potter Centre is free.
Housing the Australian art collection of the National Gallery of Victoria, the Ian Potter Centre was not part of the the original plans for Federation Square.
The later decision to include it in the Federation Square complex turned out to be a happy one, allowing visitors to Melbourne a look into the Australian art treasures of the National Gallery of Victoria in a central city location easily accessible by train, tram and bus.
Specialist gallery
After Federation Square construction had actually begun, the Victorian Government with the National Gallery of Victoria decided to split the Gallery into two campuses — its international collection at a refurbished site on St Kilda Rd, and a specialist Australian gallery, the Ian Potter Centre, as part of Federation Square.
Twenty galleries are housed in the Ian Potter Centre.
