The southern winter starts in June. And its ski time in Australia.
The Snowy Mountains in New South Wales may have the better known ski resorts -- with Thredbo, Perisher Blue, Charlotte Pass and Selwyn coming easily to mind -- but skiing in Victoria boasts its share of popular snowfields in the High Country.
Pleasure of leisure
In terms of distance, and hence travel times, the Victorian ski resorts are closer to Melbourne than the New South Wales ones are to Sydney.
And the pleasure of leisure is served in the winter, with skiing in Victoria, by Falls Creek, Mt Hotham, Mt Buller, Mt Buffalo and several other skifields.
If driving from Sydney
Certainly, at wintertime, theres no business like snow business, and theres all that snow fun, too: skiing, snowboarding, tobogganing, hot dogging.
If you were driving from Sydney, its up to nine hours of travel to the Victoria slopes.
Closer from Melbourne
From Melbourne, Victorias capital city, it would take you about five hours to Falls Creek, five and a half hours to Mt Hotham, four hours to Mt Buffalo, and less than three hours to Mt Buller. You could be skiing in Victoria much quicker than you could be skiing north of the border.
Or you could fly to the border town of Albury and drive, or travel by coach, to the snow.
Snow chains
If required to use snow chains, note that you may be turned back if your vehicle's tyres are not fitted with them.
